About the Firm
A consulting practice built around the needs of established industrial firms
← Back to HomeOur Story
Starting from the Kinta Valley
permataisa was established in Ipoh with a clear focus: to offer structured consulting work to manufacturers and industrial businesses in Perak who would benefit from a considered outside perspective. The firm takes its name from the Malay word for gem — a reference to the region's history as a tin-mining centre and, by extension, to the idea that careful examination often reveals value that routine operational life can obscure.
The founding partners spent a combined twenty years working inside manufacturing operations across central Malaysia before deciding that the most useful thing they could offer was not another line of management within a firm, but rather an informed and independent view from outside. The engagements we offer — floor diagnostics, cost-to-serve analysis, and group restructuring advisory — reflect the questions we were asked most often during those years, and which were consistently the hardest to address without someone who had no stake in the answer.
We work with a small number of clients at any one time. This is deliberate. The quality of attention we can give to a diagnostic or a restructuring exercise is directly related to how much of our time and thinking is available to it. We prefer to do fewer things well rather than take on more volume than we can serve properly.

Mission & Values
The things we hold to, regardless of the engagement
Candour
We say what we find. If the picture is more complicated than a client hoped, we present it clearly and discuss what it means — not what might be easier to hear.
Independence
We have no preferred outcome in our engagements beyond producing an accurate and useful piece of work. We do not sell implementation services, software, or ongoing retainers that would bias our analysis.
Scope discipline
Each engagement has a clear beginning and end. We resist the tendency to expand scope beyond what was agreed, and we do not generate work simply to extend an engagement.
Respect for internal teams
The people managing your operations have context we will never fully possess. Our role is to bring an additional perspective — not to suggest that internal thinking has been inadequate.
Discretion
We handle client information with care. What we learn in the course of an engagement stays within the firm. We sign non-disclosure agreements as standard practice before any substantive discussion.
Regional grounding
We work in central Malaysia because we know it. The supply chain norms, the workforce patterns, the regulatory environment — this context shapes everything we observe and recommend.
The Team
The people who do the work
Ahmad Kamarulzaman
Principal Consultant
Spent twelve years in operations management across Perak's manufacturing sector before moving into advisory work. Leads the Manufacturing Floor Diagnostic and Group Restructuring engagements.
Lee Choon Wei
Senior Analyst
Background in industrial finance and cost accounting, with particular experience in B2B product-line analysis. Leads the Cost-to-Serve Review engagements and financial modelling work.
Noorhaslinda Razali
Engagement Manager
Manages scheduling, documentation, and client coordination across all active engagements. Ensures that timelines and deliverable commitments are met and that clients always know where things stand.
Professional Standards
How we conduct our work
Mutual NDA as standard
We sign a non-disclosure agreement before any substantive conversation. This protects both parties and sets the right tone from the start.
Fixed-scope engagements
Every engagement is defined in a short proposal before work begins — scope, timeline, fee, and deliverable. No ambiguity about what you are paying for.
Data handling
Client data — financial figures, operational records, personnel information — is stored securely, used only for the engagement, and deleted upon completion unless the client requests otherwise.
Written findings, not only verbal
Every engagement produces a written document. We do not deliver findings only in presentations that can be misremembered or misplaced.
One revision round included
After the first draft of our written findings, we allow one round of clarification questions and minor revisions before final delivery. This is included in the agreed fee.
No implementation conflict
We do not sell software, equipment, or implementation services. Our only product is analysis and advice — which means our recommendations are not shaped by what we would like to sell you next.
Our Context
Business consulting in the Kinta Valley manufacturing context
The Kinta Valley has been an industrial region for well over a century. The firms operating here today — in metal fabrication, furniture manufacturing, food processing, construction materials, and light engineering — carry that history in their structure. Many were built by families during a period when growth was the primary objective and organisational design was secondary. The firms that have endured are capable and resilient. They are also, in many cases, carrying structural complexity that was not designed for their current size.
permataisa was established specifically to work with this kind of business. We are not a large firm offering broad transformation programmes. We are a small practice that offers three specific types of analytical engagement, each designed to address a question that recurs among manufacturers of a certain age and scale: what is actually happening on the floor, which parts of the business are and are not profitable, and whether the group structure still makes sense.
Our work is conducted from Ipoh because proximity matters in operational consulting. A floor diagnostic conducted by someone who has never seen the region's manufacturing norms, who does not know the labour market, and who is not familiar with the local supply chain will reach different — and, we believe, less useful — conclusions than one conducted by someone who does. We are that firm.
Considering whether a consulting engagement might be useful?
A first conversation is straightforward — we discuss what you are dealing with and whether our work is a reasonable fit. There is no obligation to proceed.
